Director of JEC Professional Services Ltd.

A well-designed Business Continuity exercise will test the robustness and effectiveness of Business Continuity and Crisis Management Plans. It is clearly much better to conduct a Business Continuity test to discover any weaknesses in Business Continuity Plans before an actual catastrophic event occurs. However few organisations have the time, or breadth of experience, to design and facilitate a realistic BCP exercise.

We have a proven 5-stage methodology to ensure that Business Continuity exercises are engaging experiences for the participants and are practical BCP tests.

  1. Outline Design  In this stage we determine the objectives of the exercise, scope, key aspects of the plan to be addressed, key participants approaches and scenarios
  2. Detailed Exercise Design includes scenario planning with expected activities, optional ‘spoiler incidents’ to provide more challenge where required.
  3. Develop Exercise Materials includes the development of a stimulating exercise presentation and other exercise materials
  4. Facilitation While facilitating the exercise the JEC consultant will observe how the plan is referenced. The exercise contains a hot debrief session for the participants to reflect on immediate lessons learned.
  5. Post-exercise review  We can provide a comprehensive report on the suitability of current  Business Continuity Plans with prioritised recommendations.

JEC consultants have extensive experience in the design and facilitation of Business Continuity exercises to rigorously test Business Continuity and Crisis Management Plans. We have devised and facilitated Business Continuity exercises for a diverse range of clients including Clear Channel International, Compton Care, Cottsway Housing, Good Energy, Kambi, Lyreco, MS Society, Taylor&Emmett, and Wales and West Utilities.

Business Continuity checklist

Catastrophic events like fire, explosions and other major incidents that lead to the loss of systems can have a devastating impact on the operations of organisations and in some cases injury or loss of life. To be prepared for dealing with major incidents organisations should have:

  1. Prepared a Business Continuity strategy and policy
  2. Conducted Business Impact Analysis to identify the key risks and consequent impacts and to establish the timescales within which their business areas would require specific systems and applications to be restored.
  3. Developed an Incident Management Plan so that senior management know their responsibilities and actions they will need to take in the event of a major incident.
  4. Developed a Business Continuity Plan covering all the key business functions so that staff are able to maintain services and readily recover to normal operations when the situation allows.
  5. Conducted exercises to ensure that managers and staff clearly understand their Business Continuity roles and have practised executing the plans in a pressured situation.
  6. Have in place a Disaster Recovery Plan so that the IT and telecommunications services lost in a major incident can be restored in a cost-effective way.
